Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN Honouredi At Young Lawyers' Summit in Benin, Edo State

The Chairman of the Security Agencies Relations Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (SARC- NBA), Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN was honoured for his outstanding contributions towards the welfare and improvement of Young Lawyers in Nigeria at the Young Lawyers Summit in Benin, Edo State held at the Bar House Building, Behind the High Court of Justice, Benin City, Edo State on the 6th day of May, 2023 with the theme: Beyond the norm: Empowering young legal minds. The event commenced on 4th May, 2023 and came to an end on 6th May, 2023.

The former Chairman of NBA Lagos Branch, Ikwuazom, SAN had the privilege of sharing his thoughts with the Young Lawyers' Forum (YLF) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Benin Branch on the topic: "Emerging Trends/Areas in Legal Practice  - Partnering for Global Relevance" during their 2023 Summit.

Ikwuazom, SAN noted that technology and globalisation among other things, are driving significant changes in the legal marketplace and that young lawyers must adapt to these changes.

The Learned Silk made the point that while technology is not replacing lawyers, it is contributing to the demise of traditional legal culture, replacing it with a more diverse, customer-aligned, and cost-effective marketplace. While it is not unusual for many young lawyers to worry about competition against older and more experienced colleagues,

He encouraged young lawyers to focus on harnessing their unique skills, developing their competencies, and carving out a niche in emerging sectors. But how does a young lawyer go about carving out a niche?  He provided a few tips: (i) consider the market, identify the problems clients are facing, and look out for industries and practice areas that are growing, (ii) look at yourself and consider the unique or special skills or interests you may have, (iii) build your knowledge and expertise, (iv) market yourself and communicate your value.

The Learned Silk also mentioned some practice areas that he considers to hold significant growth opportunities  - taxation, Fintech, data protection, intellectual property, ODR, ADR, construction, entertainment law, etc. He expressed the view that we do not necessarily have too many lawyers in Nigeria. Instead, he considered that we have too many lawyers doing the same thing.

He concluded by stating that he remains grateful to the leadership of the YLF of NBA Benin  Branch and the 2023 Summit Planning Committee for inviting him to be part of their Summit.
